Final Update: Saturday was our last full day in Ir

Final Update:
Saturday was our last full day in Ireland. We rented a car (with Pastor Mariah driving on the left side!!) and set out to explore more of the country. Our adventure showed me just how much variety Ireland holds in both its landscapes and history.

Starting in Bray, it was amazing to see the scenery shift so quickly from the busy streets of Dublin to peaceful coastlines with rocky shores, cool sea air, and sweeping views of the water. Driving through the Wicklow Mountains was another highlight, with winding roads through heather-covered hills, valleys, and endless green countryside.

Glendalough was probably the most meaningful stop. The cemetery, round tower, and church ruins made it easier to imagine the lives of those who lived there over a thousand years ago. Surrounded by lakes and mountains, it was easy to understand why St. Kevin chose such a peaceful and sacred place for this settlement.

Later, Kilkenny showed us another side of Irish history—a lively medieval city filled with historic streets, colorful storefronts, cafés, and the incredible Kilkenny Castle.

One of the fun surprises of the day was discovering an art fair in Kilkenny! We also experienced how popular Ireland’s natural spaces can be, with people from across Europe gathering at Glendalough’s lake to enjoy the rare warm, sunny weather.

This day trip was the perfect way to round out our experience of Ireland. Thank you to Hamline Church for supporting this incredible opportunity!

Friday Update: Today was the last day of the Conv

Friday Update:
Today was the last day of the Convocation! We all took the double-decker bus to the hotel where it was held. We started the morning by singing together and listening to some great speakers. Afterward, we had lunch with roasted potatoes, a baked potato (there were lots of potatoes this week!), green beans, and beef before heading to our final workshops.

The first workshop I chose was Who Are You? It focused on identity, what shapes it, and what helps us feel connected to others. We talked about the difference between belonging and fitting in. Fitting in is feeling like you have to change yourself to be accepted, while belonging is being able to be yourself and know you are accepted just as you are. We ended by reflecting on the question, "What is one thing you can do to help another person experience belonging?" People shared simple but meaningful answers like being kind, accepting others, and offering a smile.

My second workshop, A Dream Team: Loving God and Neighbor, was led by a Rwandan refugee and United Methodist pastor. She shared how strangers showed her kindness during difficult times and how she has been able to help others in return. She reminded us that while we often find it easy to give kindness, it can be much harder to receive it. Her message was that it is just as important to accept love from God and our neighbors as it is to give love. I found that incredibly powerful and inspiring.

To end the day, we enjoyed dinner of pasta, bread, and yes—even more potatoes! We finished with reflection, evening worship, and communion.

I have gained so much from this experience and am so grateful to have shared it with everyone else on this trip. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support—we couldn't have done it without you!

Update: They safely returned home on Sunday!

Hello and blessings from Ireland!

This is Atlas/Leon writing to you on Thursday, July 9, our second day attending the Global Young People’s Convocation 2026. The second day can be easier than the first, but navigating a conference of 650+ people that hasn't been held in eight years is still a challenge. Each day begins with morning plenary and worship from 10–12, where youth speakers from around the world share their stories and ministries. After lunch, we attend two workshops.

My first workshop was Rooted and Growing: What it Means to Be a Disciple, led by Rev. Dr. Scott Hughes. The first thing he told us was, "The life you already have is proof of your discipleship."

We were invited to sit with someone new, and I met Imke from Berlin, Germany. Together we discussed communion, baptism, and the difference between simply doing good and doing good as a disciple. My biggest takeaways were:
• God claims us as disciples before we know how to respond.
• Our membership vows call us to Prayer, Presence, Gifts, Service, and Witness.
• Small acts transform us into better disciples of Christ little by little.

My second workshop, Finding Lament as a Community, was led by Rev. Dr. Charlie Charles. He reminded us that prayers don't have to be joyful—they can express anger, hurt, and pain. Lament includes five parts: Address, Complaint, Motivation, Petition, and Trust. True lament ends in trust that hope is still possible.

Rev. Charles explained that communal lament centers on shared identity and calls for healing and systemic change. When communities paint over trauma, it only leads to collective emotional exhaustion. Pain isn't meant for one person to carry alone.

At the end, my group wrote this prayer together:

Oh God of our broken society,
You taught us to love so abundantly.
So why do we feel so alone right now?
Guide us toward intentional connection,
Where we can share our communal pain.
Help us find and create sanctuary.
Oh Lord, hear our cries.

Of course, so much more was learned than could ever fit into one post!

They've been busy at the GYPC UMC Conference! Here is their update about Wednesday:

Today was our first full day at the Global Young People's Convocation, and it was full in every sense of the word. We started the morning by grabbing breakfast from a little corner store before taking a double-decker bus to the conference. I don't know if the novelty will ever wear off; I absolutely adore the double-decker buses!

Each morning begins with a plenary session. We've joked that it's "not technically worship," even though it includes Scripture, a message, and plenty of singing. Whether they call it worship or not, it begins our day centered on God.

Lunch has quietly become one of my favorite parts of the day. We sit together as a delegation, reflecting on what we've heard and sharing what stood out. While our lunches aren't Communion, they remind me that sharing a table has always been one of the ways God forms community.

My favorite workshop was about prayers of lament. I learned that lament is bringing our grief, anger, fear, and confusion before God with bold honesty. I was surprised to learn that nearly one-third of the Psalms are prayers of lament. It reminded me that God doesn't ask us to hide our pain.

Later I attended a workshop on leadership in the UMC. One quote by Frederick Buechner has stayed with me: "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

I asked, "How can I be a leader of faith if I don't always have faithfulness?" Afterward, someone named Victoria handed me a note reminding me that good leaders are honest about their struggles and that those struggles can help others grow.

This conference has reminded me that the Church is bigger than the congregation I know back home. Meeting young people from different countries and cultures has shown me that curiosity is not the opposite of faith. I'm grateful to be here and excited for the rest of the week.

Update from GYPC:
As practiced at our pre-meetings, last night at dinner we shared our high, low and where we saw God. Highs included relief at finally dropping our luggage off at our hotel after a long red-eye flight, shuttle bus, walking, and a double decker mass-transit bus. Being greeted with GYPC signs and joy for our arrival at the airport by volunteers from Tarrytown UMC in Austin. A phenomenal walking tour guide of historic Dublin. Our lows were predictable--being tired and jet-lagged, all the walking we had done making our bodies tired, and while not as warm and muggy as Minnesota it was hot outside!

We all had a different way we saw God. On mass-transit, people treating others with dignity and respect. At Trinity College, where no matter how flawed Christianity can be, hundreds of people visit the Book of Kells daily to see a relic from early Christianity. And our group treating each other with kindness, learning more about each other in a foreign country after not getting much, if any, sleep on the plane.

Today is the first day of our conference, where we will meet hundreds of young people from around the world who identify as United Methodist. I am excited and nervous to experience what our faith is like in different parts of the world, and to see what that means for our faith individually and as we bring these experiences back to Hamline.
