Hamline Church’s Neighbors in Need fund is a dedicated ministry resource used to walk alongside individuals and families in seasons of crisis, embodying our call to love our neighbors in very practical ways.
Purpose of the Fund
The Neighbors in Need fund (also known as the Barnabas Fund) exists to respond quickly and compassionately when neighbors face unexpected financial hardship or systemic barriers, especially those related to poverty, displacement, and immigration. It reflects our identity as a Sanctuary for the City of Saint Paul, where we seek to encounter the sacred, come together at the table, and care for one another in community.
Current Focus: Immigrants and refugees
In this season, the fund is being utilized to support immigrants and refugees within our congregation and the wider neighborhood who are experiencing acute vulnerability. Guided by our commitment to welcome the stranger and stand with those navigating complex immigration systems, the fund prioritizes stabilizing support that helps families remain housed, fed, and safely rooted in community.
How the Fund is Used
Through Neighbors in Need, Hamline Church provides:
- Food support, including groceries and meals, to help ensure families have consistent access to nourishing food.
- Rent and emergency housing assistance, helping households avoid eviction or homelessness during times of financial crisis.
- Help with immigration-related legal expenses, partnering with community resources so that neighbors can pursue safety, work authorization, and long-term security.
A Ministry of Accompaniment
Gifts to the Neighbors in Need fund allow Hamline Church to respond personally and relationally so that no neighbor faces these challenges alone. We also work closely with a variety of community partners including local schools, community food assistance programs and other churches. In every disbursement, the goal is not only immediate relief, but also the affirmation of dignity, belonging, and hope for our immigrant and refugee neighbors.
