Lenten ExplorationLenten Exploration

Join us on Wednesday evenings during Lent as we explore the purpose and meaning of Land Acknowledgement statements. We will examine the history involved in our relationships with the land and the indigenous people who originally occupied it, including the history specific to the land on which Hamline church and some of its predecessor congregations were built. We will consider how the broader policies of the Doctrine of Discovery and Colonialism have impacted where we are and who we are today. Please join us to learn more about our past and share thoughts about how we rend our hearts by acknowledging our history. As a community we can move toward healing for ourselves and our Native American neighbors. Contact Susan (susan.mullin@comcast.net) with questions.

In addition to Wednesday evening discussions, a small group will meet after church each Sunday in the green room led by Susan Mullin and Trudy Dunham.

February 21: What is the Doctrine of Discovery?
Watch a 15 minute video and then join in a table discussion sharing some of your own family history.

February 28: How did we come to be here?
Guest Speaker Jessica Intermill will present the findings of her research into the treaties and first deeds of the land currently occupied by Hamline Church, as well as two of our predecessor congregations. She is an attorney who has worked with tribal nations for over a decade. She makes land history accessible because she believes in the change we make together.

March 6: How does colonization continue to affect our lives?
Listen to a video conversation from people around the world, and then join in the conversation at your table.

March 13: What is the world we envision?
Sarina Partridge (musician, song-leader and educator) will lead us in a community singing event. Sarina says, “we sing the world we want to inhabit, and we sing to understand the world we live in now.” No musical experience needed!

March 20: What is a Land Acknowledgement?
You might hear it on the radio or at the beginning of a workshop or program. It may be as simple as, “We are on Dakota land.” What is the purpose of a land acknowledgement statement, and why might we want to create one for Hamline Church? What would we want to include in such a statement?
