The two doors at the main entrance symbolize the two-fold nature of our Lord, the human and devine. Elevated between the doorways is the figure of an angel in the attitude of prayer, carved in stone, symbolizing God's messenger inviting the multitude to the house of prayer. Above each door is a richly carved panel of a grapevine, symbolizing our Lord and his followers, the church. Birds in its branches represent souls abiding in Christ, and grapes represent unity.
A deep, heavily-moulded arch crowns the main entrance with carvings of a grapevine, and carved sumbols of the four evangelists: Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, Saint Luke, and Saint John. Seven panes symbolize the seven days of creation, and also the seven Christian virtues: humility, liberality, chastity, gentleness, temperance, brotherly love, and diligence.
