MUSIC AT HAMLINE CHURCH
MINNESOTA BOYCHOIR - Sunday, April 18, 2010
Following their Christmas concert to a full house at Hamline Church in December, the Minnesota Boychoir will lead us in our 9:30 worship service on Sunday, April 18th This is one of Minnesota's finest choral traditions. The choir is comprised of boys and young men, ages 7-17, from throughout the Twin Cities. They present classical, sacred, secular, folk and contemporary choral music, sung in a variety of languages, and have earned a reputation of artistic excellence. Mark S. Johnson is the Music Director of the Minnesota Boychoir and began his work with them in 1991. Bring your friends - especially the school-aged ones.

KEYS to the Church with the music of Steven C. Anderson A benefit for the music program of Hamline United Methodist Church was held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 – 3:00pm. Steven C. Anderson, a 1988 graduate of Hamline University, spent many hours during his college days immersed in his music amidst the magnificent acoustics and beauty of Hamline United Methodist Church (H.U.M.C.) He was an eager organ and piano student, and genuinely proud that he had been given the “KEYS to the church” to practice and perfect his skills as an up-and-coming recording artist. Steven’s senior recital, “From Bach to Rock” filled the church with diverse musical styles. Over the next 2 decades, Steven has returned to substitute and perform at H.U.M.C.
Upon learning of difficult financial times at the church, Steven wanted to help in some way to get the music department back on its feet. “I wanted to give back to the place that inspired my life long passion of making music, so I am bringing MY own “KEYS to the church!” Steven has moved his cherished 9-foot Bosendorfer grand piano to H.U.M.C., with the goal of performing, composing and recording in this magical space. This rare and pristine piano will be used for services, concert, and recitals, culminating with a benefit concert on Sunday, November 15th. Donations and CD sales will benefit the growing music program at H.U.M.C.
The majestic pipe organ will also be featured at the benefit concert, as H.U.M.C’s music director and organist Chuck Parsons will perform. Other “surprise” guests will complete an afternoon of “Harmony for H.U.M.C.”
In his four years at H.U.M.C., Mr. Parsons has grown the adult choir from 7-24 voices, added adult and children’s handbell choirs, a brass group, Compline Choir of Mn and a Choral Scholar Program.
We are looking at this event to be the beginning of a regular concert series. Sunday, November 15, 2009 - 3:00 PM

Over the years, Hamline UMC's current Music Director, Charles Parsons, has touched hearts through the ministry of the Minnesota Compline Choir. In February,2009, he announced that he wanted to step aside from the Choir. Sunday, May 17 at 8:30 PM, marked the last Compline service celebrated under the direction of Charles Parsons over the past 19 years, first at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis (1992-2005)and since 2005 at Hamline UMC here in St. Paul.
We are indebtd to Chuck for his hard work with Compline over the years and we look forward to the Mn Compline Choir continuing here under new direction next fall after the summer break.
On September 13, 2009 The Minnesota Compline Choir resumed as an independent entity under new Music Director, James R. Biery (Organist at St. Paul Cathedral). The choir will continue offering services at 8:30PM on Sunday evenings at Hamline UMC until the end of the year and then begin, in 2010, to rotate its services between four churches, appearing once a month at Hamline.

This recording, with 18 selections, highlights the choir singing music based primarily on chant melodies. Unison singing is featured, as well as two- and four-part chant. The sung liturgy from the Compline worship service is heard in its entirety augmented by complimentary organ voluntaries, many of which are also based on chant melodies.

Thank you to Dr. George Chu and his Hamline University Choir for joining us in worship for a third annual winter collaboration. The choral and organ music performed was all from the Romantic Period of music literature – European music written from approximately 1840 – 1910. The Romantic movement held that there were inescapable realities in the world which could only be reached through emotion, feeling and intuition. Romantic music struggled to increase emotional expression and power to describe these deeper truths, while preserving or extending the formal structures from the (previous) classical period.

The two choirs shared donuts and conversation before the service. [ HU choristers are dressed in black. ]
IT IS FINISHED All of the work in our original contract with Hendrickson Organ Company has been completed. The organ sounds wonderful with its brighter, cleaner trumpets, oboes, trombones and tuba. Stop by after the postlude or during the week and I would be happy to show you how our magnificent Casavant has been restored. - Chuck Parsons

"O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" We celebrated Charles Wesley's 300th birthday on Sunday, May 20 with a hymn sing featuring a few of the more than 6500 hymns he wrote. Between 1738 and 1785, he and his older brother John published 64 collections of hymns for the early Methodist societies. In this way, the teachings of the denomination were spread throughout the entire world. Come and sing with us!

The Minnesota Compline Choir participated in the 9:30 service on May 6, 2006.
A NOTE FROM CHARLES PARSONS I founded the Minnesota Compline choir in the early 1990’s while I was Music Director at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. It is modeled after the most well-known Compline Service in Seattle, WA. After experiencing that amazing service, I decided to form a similar group and service here in Minnesota. Over the years, the Minnesota Compline Choir has performed in front of live audiences in places all over the country and has also developed a loyal and widespread audience via its website and radio ministries as well. The Minnesota Compline Choir is a 501© 3 non-profit organization and is completely funded by the generous donations from its listeners; many of whom are members of Hamline United Methodist Church. I am very excited that Hamline UMC is able to host the Minnesota Compline Choir. The Choir is very grateful to you and your church leadership for giving us the opportunity to share our gifts with you, both on Sunday nights and also during the upcoming Sunday morning service. May 6th marks the continuation of a very bright future for the Compline organization and a shared ministry with Hamline Church.
Previously: WOMANVOICE WOMANSPIRIT FESTIVAL. Friday evening, April 13, 2007 at 8:00 PM at Hamline UMC [previously scheduled for Saturday, February 24, 2007, but cancelled due to severe weather] - a festival of choral music written by and for women. The festival featured 150 women’s voices from the University of Minnesota, College of St. Catherine, University of St. Thomas, Augsburg College, and Hamline University. Among the works performed were newly commissioned pieces by Emma Lou Diemer for women’s choir and organ. The choirs collaborated with Charles Parsons, Music Director at HUMC. Admission was free.
