Friends and Fellowship at Hamline Church
At Hamline Church we value activities that afford fellowship opportunities and build community. There are social groups for people in common generations and also inter-generational groups based on interests.
GROUPS & ACTIVITIES
FICTION AND FELLOWSHIP "Come and join us in the Green Room! " - whether or not you've had the time to finish it or even read the book! -
This book discussion group, entering its TENTH year, is led by church member and award-winning mystery author, Wm. Kent Krueger (Boundary Waters, Iron Lake, Purgatory Ridge, The Devil's Bed, Blood Hollow, Copper River, Red Knife etc.). Kent has won the Anthony - best mystery novel - Award in 2 consecutive years (2005/2006) for novels in his "Cork" series. He won the genre category Minnesota Book Award in May, 2007 for Copper River and again in May, 2008 for his Cork thriller, Thunder Bay (for which he also won the American Mystery Booksellers' 2008 Dilys Award). He has recently published another Cork O'Connor mystery, Heaven's Keep (2009). Kent has two more Cork mysteries in the works to complete the series. In the next one, two of our church members will figure as characters because their spouses "successfully bid on that option" at a Silent Auction held on Sunday mornings in November, 2008.
The group meets monthly on the 2nd Sunday 6:30-8:00PM. The theme for the 2008-2009 church year was "Minnesota" (in honor of the state's Sesquicentennial), once again alternating between fiction and non-fiction works. There was be NO specific theme for 2009-2010 and a wide variety of types of reading selections resulted.
Next: 12 September, 2010 Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. At that time we will set plans for the 2010-11 reading sessions.
As always, discussion is highlighted by lots of good fellowship and good food. And remember, everyone is always welcome whether you've finished or even read the book!

HAMLINE CHURCH GARDENERS ADVENTURE Goodbye siberian elm and buckthorn, hello monarchs and Eastern amberwings! We are helping green the east edge of the Minnehaha parking lot! In partnership with Hamline University and the Capitol Region Watershed District, Hamline Church and community volunteers are transforming the weedy trench adjacent to the south parking lot into a garden that attracts wildlife and treats runoff from a 6000 sq ft. area of pavement. Before starting the on-going project, volunteers participated in a 90-minute workshop to learn about the role plants play in water quality, Minnesota natives and invasives, and the how-to and why-to of rain gardens.

We thank all of the people of the church who have so generously helped out in visiting shut-ins, distributing Christmas gifts, and supporting all our activities and fund raising endeavors in recent years and this year, too. A recent UMW project was that of gathering recipes from members of the congregation and preparing "mini-recipe booklets" for sale at the November 19, 2006 UMW Bazaar. There are now TEN booklets, (an additional 3 were created in spring 2007), gathered into food categories which sell at $2.00 each.
