Church & Society/ Missions

Serving Our Neighbors, Near and Far

Service to society is an important part of the United Methodist Church.  The role of the Church & Society/Missions committee at HUMC is to identify areas where we can make a difference, raise awareness of issues, and follow through with our gifts of energy, service and money.  We work with local organizations by providing helping hands and coordinating gift-giving.  On the national and international level, we help by raising money for special projects and supporting mission efforts.

The following are just a few of the ways we are working to make a differenceÖ

Help Make a Difference

Loaves and Fishes

        (Dorothy Day)

For over 20 years, HUMC has helped prepare and serve nutritious meals to homeless individuals and families.  We serve a Sunday evening meal 6 times per year (on the 3rd Sunday of even numbered months).  Sign up for any or all 6 Sundays.

Time required: 2-3 hours per Sunday

Building Projects

Over the years, we have provided an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get

the rust off your hammer and saw!  Through volunteerism with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Urban Homeworks, we try to find opportunities to serve with some muscle.  You do not need to be a skilled carpenter – anyone can help!

Time required:  4-8 hrs per Saturday

Food Shelf

On the first Sunday of each month, food shelf donations are collected for the food bank at the Keystone Community Services.  We ask everyone to bring non-perishable food items for this collection.   Special needs are published in the HUMC LiveWire.

    Time required:  Less than 1hr/month

Paint-a-Thon

HUMC works with the Minnesota Paint-a-Thon project in August.  We help prepare and paint the house of a needy person in the vicinity of Hamline church.  Work involves scraping off old paint, priming, and applying one or two new coats.

Minnesota Foodshare

During March all Minnesotans are asked to help restock the food shelves in our state.   Each Sunday in March, we ask that you bring food items or a cash donation to help

meet our target of 2000 dollars or pounds of food.

McVay Youth Partnership

HUMC provides snacks and refreshments to a program where Hamline University students work with junior high youth to assist them with academic and leadership skills.

FARE For All (Fare Share)

HUMC provides the space and coordination for the distribution of food for the FARE For All program on the third ( 3rd) Saturday of each month.  In exchange for two hours of volunteering in the community and a very modest fee, participants receive $35 to $40 of food each month.

Family Place

For the past few years HUMC has been one of the organizations to periodically purchase the food and prepare an evening meal for homeless families.

Special and Short Term Projects

Many opportunities exist for participating in local, national, and international short-term mission and disaster relief projects.  In recent years we have participated in the Crop Walk and the Pride Festival, gathered kitchen supplies and school supplies for the Saint Paul Area Council of Churches drives, and assisted with Project Home, which provides temporary stays for homeless families.   We also gather donations for relief projects through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

Gift Giving

Hamline Church has a long tradition of generous giving which allows us to support a broad range of mission and outreach activities.  Gift-giving includes:

Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving offerings – these special offerings are designated for local, national, and international missions or to meet ongoing commitments such as groceries for the meals we serve at the Dorothy Day Center (Loaves and Fishes) and United Methodist Conference requests.

Special Appeals – through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the Church World Service, and other organizations, Hamline Church responds to natural disasters, famine, and other crises worldwide.

Special Observances – throughout the year, Hamline Church participates in the following special Sunday collections - -

o            Human Relations Sunday

o            One Great Hour of Sharing

o            Native American Awareness Sunday

o            MN Conference Love Offering

o            Peace with Justice Sunday

o            Christian Education Sunday

o           United Methodist Student Sunday
