PRELUDE         Prelude and Fugue in C                Dietrich Buxtehude

GREETING

*HYMN OF PRAISE 64  Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

*CALL TO WORSHIP  (St. Patrick)

I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity,

by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

I bind unto myself today the virtues of the star-lit heaven,

            the glorious sun's life-giving ray,

the whiteness of the moon at even,

the flashing of the lightning free,

            the whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,

the stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks.

            Christ be with me

            Christ within me,

            Christ behind me,

            Christ before me.

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires,

known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts

of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may

perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through

Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Holy, holy, holy, holy God of Sabaoth!

Heav'n and earth are full of Thy majesty.

We laud and praise Thy name, we adore Thee,

*DOXOLOGY 95            Praise God, from Whom all Blessings Flow

*OFFERTORY PRAYER (Psalm 138)

Exalted Lord, we offer these sacrificial gifts from thankful hands

Through these gifts, help our hurting and needy neighbors so they feel

THE LORD'S PRAYER

GIVING THE BREAD AND CUP

Communion Hymn 626             Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Anthem         Come and Taste            arr. Alice Parker

Come and taste along with me, consolation flowing free,

From the Father's wealthy throne, Sweeter than the honeycomb.

            I'll praise God and you praise God, And we'll all praise God together;

We'll praise the Lord for the work that He has done,

And we'll bless His name forever.

            All that come with free good will make the banquet sweeter still;

Now I go to Mercy's door, Asking for a little more.

Goodness running like a stream through the New Jerusalem

            Sweetens earth and heaven both.

O return, ye child of grace, Turn and see God's smiling face.

Hark, He calls back-sliders home, Then from Him no longer roam.

MUSIC NOTE

Dietrich Buxtehude 1637-1707 was the most well-known German organist of

his time. Both G. F. Handel and J. S. Bach traveled long distances to hear him

play – and to express covert interest in being his successor.  This morning's

prelude is typical of the high Baroque flourishes of his time.

GUESTS AND VISITORS

Welcome to Hamline Church.  You are a special part of our worship experience.

An elevator is located in the Commons Area to the west of the sanctuary.  It has

stops at the sanctuary level, south entrance and lower level. Gliders and rocking

chairs are available for your convenience as you enter the sanctuary from the

Commons.  Hearing devices are available from the ushers.

TO OUR FREQUENT VISITORS

Your presence in our midst enhances the worship experience of us all.  If you

would like to learn more about the Hamline Church community or are considering

becoming a member, we invite you to a gathering in the parlor the first Sunday

of each month with our pastor, Rev. Pat Hinker, and membership coordinator,

Amy Schultz.  We typically receive members the last Sunday of every month.  For

more information, please contact Pastor Pat at: phinker@hamlinechurch.org.

CHILD CARE

Parents are encouraged to bring children of all ages to worship.  Special "companion

bears" and activity bags for children are available at the entrances to the sanctuary.

A well-equipped, unstaffed nursery is available on Sunday mornings for children

from infant – 18 mos.  The Toddler Room (staffed) is located on the lower level

of the education building in Room 5 and accommodates children 18 months through

3 years old.   Ushers will direct you to either room.

PARENTS OF SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENTS are asked to pick up their toddlers

from room #5, preschoolers/kindergarteners from room #3 and 1st through 6th graders

from the Fireside Room from Communion Training.   YOUTH GROUP will meet

today at 10:45 in the Youth Room, #8.

PLEASE NOTE:

If you have an announcement to make on Sunday morning, please check with the

pastor before the service begins.  Pastor Pat is also happy to make short announcements

if you write it out on a card and give it to her before the service begins.  Unless the

announcement is time-sensitive, we will not have announcements on Communion

Sunday, the first Sunday of each month.  If you are in the hospital, or wish a visit

for any reason, please contact the church office.

SILENT AUCTION – FEBRUARY 14, 21, and 28

Share your gifts, talents, skills or an item that can be auctioned.  Pick up a form in

the Fireside Room, in the Live Wire, or on the church's web site. Return the form to

Dave Anderson or Teresa Renneke or leave in the church office by February 7. Any

questions, call Dave at 633-1820.  Bidding will begin on February 14!

GETTING TO KNOW THE FAMILY

There will be many ways for the congregations of Church of the Good Shepherd and

Hamline Church to get to know each other in the coming months as we plan joint

activities and work together on the details needed for our merger.  As those events

are planned, you are invited to take an opportunity to worship with COGS at one of

its worship services in the coming months.  The church is located just west of the

intersection of Fairview and Marshall with worship at 10:30.  The creation of any new

family involves a blending of traditions and the creation of new ones.  Worship is an

important part of those traditions.  We hope that you will take the time to get to know

COGS worship traditions as a part of our blending and creating new traditions

HAITI RELIEF DONATIONS QUALIFY FOR IMMEDIATE TAX DEDUCTIONS

People who give to UMCOR and other charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti

can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season,

according to the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers who itemize deductions on

their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision, enacted Jan. 22. Only

cash contributions made after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, are eligible.

This includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card.

The new law only applies to cash (as opposed to property) contributions. The

contributions must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by

the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Taxpayers have the option of deducting these

contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns, but not both. To give to the

UMCOR relief in Haiti, make a separate check to the church, and write 'Haiti Relief'

on the memo line.

FOOD PERSPECTIVES, INC.   www.fpitesters.com

Do you like to eat or try new foods?  Sign up to become a taste tester!  Good News!

Hamline Church has received its first $80 earned by taste testers.  Over 30 people

so far have signed up to be taste testers.  When someone qualifies and does a taste test,

our church will receive $10 and the participant (that's you) will receive between

$25 - $175, depending on time involved and the level of commitment.   This money

you may use as you wish – treat yourself to dinner out, pay bills, or even donate it to

our church.  To see if a person qualifies for a test; they may be contacted by a "live"

caller who will ask a series of questions, by an Interactive Voice Response (a recording)

that asks questions, or online through an email account.  If you don't qualify, no money

is received and your name is put back for future test possibilities.  Tests are done at

many locations; some more convenient than others.  If you have not registered, go

to www.fpitesters.com.  Be sure to indicate you want to donate to our organization,

Hamline United Methodist Church, so our church receives the $10 per test.  The

more people participating, the more money we can earn.  If you have any questions,

contact Virginia Anderson or visit www.foodperspectives.com.

WANTED: PEOPLE AGE 65 – 84 FOR TASTE TESTS
