                        Hamline Church, United Methodist

                    A new community in Christ

                              Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

                                         August 1, 2010

FOR PREPARATION

     Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about

     shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.  We are all meant to

     shine, as children  do.  We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is

     within us.   It's not just in some  of us; it's in everyone.

                                                                                                                   Marianne Williamson

GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

RINGING OF THE BELL

*CONGREGATIONAL INTROIT

Come and receive, hope and good news; Come and believe. Christ is alive.

Then we will go, giving good news.  Thanks be to God!

*CALL TO WORSHIP       Psalm 107 from Psalms for Praying

We give thanks to You, who are the Source of Love;

Whose Light shines forth throughout the universe!

Come, awaken our hearts that we might do your work;

For, without You, we can do nothing; 'tis your Love that loves through us.

Gather us in from the lands,  from the east and the west,

  from the south and the north.

Let all who are hungry and thirsty, whose souls are faint within them,

Cry out to the Most Merciful to nourish them with healing love;

Enter into the Great Silence, where you may hear the voice of the Beloved,

Let your heart be clear and simple, and your soul filled with Light;

Enter the place of gentleness, the heart-space of the Beloved.

*HYMN OF PRAISE 102                   Now Thank We All Our God

*OPENING PRAYER           Ted Loder

Eternal God, grant us your peace, for we have made peace with what does not

give peace, and we are afraid.  Drive us deep now, to face ourselves, so we may

see our capacity to deceive and willingness to be deceived,

Our loving of things and using of people, our struggle for power and shrinking

of soul, our addiction to comfort and sedation of conscience, our readiness to

criticize and our reluctance to create, our clamor for privilege and silence at

injustice, our seeking for security and forsaking the God-life.  Christ Jesus,

grant us your peace.  Amen.

*WORDS OF GRACE AND ASSURANCE

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

*SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

A TIME FOR THE CHILD IN US ALL

      Go now in peace, go now in peace,

      may the love of God surround you

      everywhere,

      everywhere you may go.

                        WE HEAR AND CELEBRATE GOD'S WORD

EPISTLE LESSON            Colossians 3:1-11

MUSIC                       Impermanent Things                              Peter Himmelman

Oh how they fool me
Dominate and rule me
They keep me waiting here forever
All these impermanent things
Well their beauty's never aging
But their worthlessness's enraging
You know we all stand alone when we're together

Why keep hanging on
To things that never stay
Things that just keep stringin' us along
From day to day

All these impermanent things
Present yet elusive
Passive yet abusive
Tearing out the heart in utter silence
All these impermanent things
Well they point in all directions
Like secondhand reflections
And they're leading us to subtle shades of violence

All these impermanent things
Well they're trying to convince me
Baptize my soul and rinse me
Purge my mind of honesty and fire
All these impermanent things
Well they all add up to zero
They make-believe that they're my hero
Then they fill my mind with doubt and false desires
