CATCH THE SPIRIT - Capital Campaign - Update INITIAL RESULTS of our Capital Campaign Drive:
As of December 1, 2008, our pledged amount coupled with our non-pledge sources had totaled about $470,000. This exceeded the $450,000 estimated goal by our fundraising consulting firm way back in the summer when the economy was doing better. It was through everyone'ís faith and support that enabled the initial campaign to be a success. Thank You!
Now we move into the next phase of our three year campaign.

All checks may be made out to HUMC with a notation that it is for the Capital Campaign Fund. Everyone's generosity will help make the overall campaign be successful and ensure the future of Hamline Church for many generations. Thank you!

THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PARLOR PAINTING PROJECT! (Late Summer, 2007 through Spring, 2008)
Tireless volunteers worked in the parlor ñ stripping and refinishing walls, cleaning and caulking windows in July and August, 2007 and finished painting the parlor and lower level walls in Spring, 2008. Soon they'll be tackling the upper level offices and doing carpeting. Helpers are always welcome! Bravo to project coordinators: Al Edgar, Bob Sellers, John Jakel.

CONGRATULATIONS! - to the Hamline Church Gardeners team. They've done a great job of keeping the gardens looking very attractive over the past few years. The team kept the church gardens in summers of 2006 and 2007 in equally lovely repair. Their newest project (begun in late-summer, 2007 [under the direction of Amy Schultz] and now on-going, is the introduction of a "rain garden" in the area east of the big parking lot off Minnehaha which Hamline Univ. shares with the church. Their 2005 [under direction of Barbara and Rolfe Leary] "GOLDEN BLOOM AWARD" (written up in a Jan, 2006 St.Paul PPress article) was well-deserved. Gardening Info

50 Years at the MN State Fair - Awardees! Hamline Church Dining Hall folks who received "50 Years at the Fair" plaques: (l-r) Kay Keenan, Betty Ward, Elaine Christiansen, Bonnie Iverson [Not pictured: Diane Milbrandt and Aileene Vanderbilt ]. The annual awards ceremony for groups or individuals reporting "50 years at the Fair" was held on the MN State Fairgrounds at 5:00PM on Aug 27th, 2007 in Heritage Square. We congratulate them! Our congregation is deeply in their debt.
DISCUSSIONS ON STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CHURCH Hamline Church considers itself a relational congregation, and puts a high value on building and nurturing relationships among its members. To help support that goal, we conducted a series of gatherings to discuss how we can strengthen relationships through the programs and activities that are available to our members. The Church Council sought input over the summer on the ways that our programs can and do strengthen our relationships. We held two discussions in July and we thank all who came to participate. There was a final session on Sunday, September 23,2007 at 10:45 am. At that session ideas gathered in the July sessions were shared and additional thoughts and suggestions were recorded. Watch for final tallies or reports and resulting new activities and programs.
THANKS AGAIN FOR BRINGING IN BREAKFAST TYPE ITEMS DURING THE SPECIAL SUMMER APPEAL Your food items helped with supplying breakfasts this summer for children who would normally have had breakfast at their school, especially big boxes/bags of breakfast cereal and/or any non-perishable breakfast foods (granola bars, instant oatmeal, etc). Our church food donations were collected and delivered each week to the Keystone Food Shelf (formerly Hamline/Midway & Merriam Park) on University between Prior and Fairview. We owe thanks to Jacquie and Bob Sellers for their continuing service to this project over the years.
WE WELCOMED TO OUR NEW EDUCATION/YOUTH DIRECTOR - SUMMER, 2007 I would like to introduce myself; I am Laurie Erickson and I am the new Education/Youth Director. I have a masterís degree in Family Education and I have been the Director/Head Teacher at St. Anthony Park UMC Nursery School for 16 years. I am looking forward to working with all of the families and the children at Hamline Church. This year, we will continue with participation in the Workshop Rotation Model to teach Sunday school for grades 1-6. We will need volunteers to teach the Sunday School Bible Discovery Zones. The Sunday school will need a strong commitment from our families and volunteers. With the warm days of summer, fall may seem far away, but it is already time to schedule volunteers for the 2007-2008 year. I will be contacting all of the Sunday school families in July to ask for a commitment of five volunteer dates per family for the school year. My work phone number is 651-603-7085 and my email address is lerickson@hamlinechurch.org. Please call me or email with any question your might have. ROOF REPLACEMENT PROJECT Completed in December, 2008! ____________________ - If you're interested in helping with a project to "recycle as craftwork" some of the old roof slate tiles, contact the church office -
FIX-IT/FIX-UP OPPORTUNITIES During the last few years ... a number of small fix-it and repair projects were put on hold. Now ... we have begun to look at and take action on the smaller things that can be done with volunteer help. As you are all aware, two major projects were completed during 2006 ó the repair of the elevator and the replacement of the roof on the education wing. These were both costly, but necessary, repairs that had to be done. They both, however, pale in comparison to the big projects we are still facingóreplacement (or repair) of the church roof and sealing the building from moisture by tuck pointing the entire structure. There are areas that need painting, staining, and other minor repairs. Church member Brett Lewandowski has taken on the task of tuck pointing around the lower levels (a task most of us do not have the skills to do), a good example of a project that is being done on volunteer time, but helps preserve the building while saving money in both the short and long term. One does not need to be a member of the trustees to work on, or lead, one of these projects, and many church members have the skills needed to do much of the needed work. We are always looking for a few (or many) good people to expand their horizons, and help maintain the church at the same time. We are also looking for suggestions of projects that need doing. Anyone interested may contact me or any member of the trustees. --Roger Greiling, Trustees Chair
The Hamline UMC congregation owes Joan Hartman (Education), C.O. "Krueg" Krueger (Office security), Aileene Vanderbilt & Maxine SmithÜ (Receptionists), Jena Enger (Youth) a huge debt of gratitude for their service.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO VOLUNTEERED IN SUMMER 2007 [NOW WATCH FOR JUNE CAR SHOW, 2008 OPPORTUNITIES] 110 AND STILL COOKING..." ...was the theme this year for the Dining Hall for the State Fair. Many of our congregation members volunteered this year and some brought friends and family. We would like your stories from this year or any other, thoughts, memories, articles or any information regarding the Dining Hall. Have you worked at the Dining Hall for 50 years? We want to know. Please put any information you have about the Dining Hall into the Dining Hall mail box in the church office.

In Fall, 2006 the UMW folks collected recipes for their "mini recipe booklets"which they sold (@$2.00 each) at their Fall bazaar on November 19. Eight booklets were completed in Fall, 2006 and three more [Veggie Dishes, Breads and Scones, Kids and Candy] were produced in spring, 2007. Copies still available! Contact a UMW member for info. Hamline Church's History book still available Casting Long Shadows: 125 Years at Hamline United Methodist Church is still available through the church office (beginning Mon. June 5th). The 222-page book recounts the growth of the congregation since it held its first services ten days before the beginning of classes at Hamline University in September, 1880. A comprehensive history, it includes a chapter by Dr. Charles Graham, former president of Hamline University, on the institutional relationship of the two organizations, as well as chapters outlining some of the accomplishments of the congregation. Members of the congregation brought neighborhood amenities such as the Hamline Branch Library to the neighborhood, established study and social programs for men and women, hosted neighborhood events, and reached out to those in need. Though the specifics of the programs have changed over the years, the congregation's mission as a welcoming congregation continues. Maps, illustrations and photos bring the pages to life, and there is a complete index. Books for members of HUMC is still available for a suggested donation of $10.For non-members and general public: The cost is $15 each. Books can be picked up at the church office during regular office hours (9-4, M-F).- We are indebted to Mary Bakeman (church member) and her team for their diligent work in collecting information and producing this new church history. Mary Bakeman did a presentation, "Tour and History of Hamline United Methodist Church" on Saturday, December 9, 2006 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The free event was part of the Hamline Midway History Corps' ongoing series of meetings and events to share local history.
